Chair for practical computer science and bioinformatics LMU LFE 7, Computer Science Department, LMU München, Prof. Dr. Ralf Zimmer

Overview

The teaching and research unit (chair) for practical computer science and bioinformatics is part of the department of computer science of the LMU within the faculty of mathematics, computer science and statistics. The chair was established in October 2001 with two scientists, namely Prof. Ralf Zimmer and Florian Sohler (M.Sc.). The unit participates in the study course of the faculty, i.e. the standard computer science curriculum (Diplom) at the LMU as well as the various disciplines for which the computer science department provides courses (computer science as minor subject). Currently, the unit concentrates on the development of the bioinformatics curriculum and the foundation of the bioinformatics center Munich.

Teaching

Our curriculum covers a wide range of courses with a focus on algorithmics in bioinformatics. For our current schedule look at the teaching page.

Research

Our research activities concentrate on areas of computer science relevant for bioinformatics, e.g. algorithms and complexity, machine learning and statistical learning theory, discrete and combinatorial optimisation, string and sequence analysis, text analysis and data/text mining, graphs, Petri net models, probabilistic modeling and bayesian networks.
Currently the LFE is active in the following bioinformatics research areas:

  • Protein sequence, structure, and family analysis
  • Protein structure prediction
  • Analysis of expression data
  • Biochemical (metabolic and regulatory) networks
  • Representation of biological knowledge and extraction from databases and scientific texts
  • Genome analysis
  • Proteomics

In all of these research areas the LFE performs research projects in which scientists, Ph.D. students and students are funded by third parties.
